Acer Aspire 8920G preview

Approximately six months ago, Acer debuted its Gemstone series -- a range of laptops that was co-designed by BMW. They were excellent products, spoiled only -- we believe -- by the questionable styling. Today, Acer has unveiled the latest evolution of the series, known as the Gemstone Blue. Not only are these more stylish than the previous models, but they're the first laptops to feature either 16-inch or 18.4-inch displays that offer true 16:9 aspect ratios. Starting at £899, the Aspire 8920G isn't available until later this week, but we've had the pleasure of testing a pre-production sample of this 18.4-inch desktop replacement.

Outlook
The Aspire 8920G is a very promising machine, and one which may set standards in years to come. The 18.4-inch display in particular is a marvel -- mainly because it has a true 16:9, 1080p resolution. We'll reserve judgement until we see a final sample, but early indications are that Acer is on to a winner.

Rip Saw UGV Tank Fast as a Motorcycle, Yours For Only $200,000

First introduced in 2005, the Rip Saw is about to hit the market with a $200,000 price tag. The custom-built UGV can hit 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, go 80 mph, and can maneuver over any surface or terrain a tank can. And the video is pretty good; watch as it drives through a barn as if it were the cardboard boxen your handset came in.

The privately-funded Rip Saw was first built by the Howe brothers for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. Though the Rip Saw didn't win, its video certainly turned some heads, enough to find funding to build more than one. I normally don't get too excited about military shit like this, but any machine that can obliterate an wood shack with ease and turn donuts on snow wins my heart. Cel mai mare LCD din lume

Acesta ocupa o suprafaţă de 6000 m², giganticul LCD din Beijing (China) este fără îndoială cel mai mare din lume. În total, şapte playere video HD (cinci pentru show-ul video, unul pentru ecranul de zi şi ultimul pentru stand-by)

Cum funcţionează? Prin sincronizarea celor cinci surse HD menţionate mai sus. Practic, ecranul este constituit dintr-un vector de cinci display-uri XGA, sincronizarea lor oferind impresia unui tot unitar.

Consumul electric al acestuia poate ajunge până la 2 MW (ceruţi de cele 14.5 milioane LED-uri), adică energia suficientă pentru iluminarea a peste 8000 de case.

Ecranul face parte dintr-un proiect major, o clădire hi-tech numită “The Palace”.
